
Phila Silver Revolutionary War Presentation Cup
Description
DESCRIPTION: A coin silver presentation cup. Paneled body with flared rim. Base marked "C. Bard 205 Arch St." for Conrad Bard (Philadephia, circa 1825-1854). Front engraved with palmetto and initials "JM" and "MMD" with banner inscribed "Relick of the Revolution" (a reference to the presentor). Flanked on either side by the inscription "Dr. James Martin Surgeon in the 3d Reg. So. Ca. Line U.S.A. To his Daughter Mary Martin Douglas". Dr. James Martin is a listed Regimental medical officer of the Revolutionary War serving in the South Carolina Infantry and honorably discharged in 1783. The 3d South Carolina Regiment (Rangers) was authorized on June 6, 1775. Engagements included Charleston (1775-1776 and 1780), Southern Highlands, and Savannah. The Regiment was captured by the British on May 12, 1780 at Charleston and was disbanded January 1, 1781. PROVENANCE: This cup was featured on the Antiques Roadshow episode that aired January 8, 2007 from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. MEASUREMENTS: 3-3/8" high. 3.60 troy ounces. CONDITION: A couple pinprick dings.
