Igor Severyanin in was an important Russian poet of the early twentieth century. Under his pen-name that means "Man of the North," he led the Ego-Futurists of St. Petersburg who opposed the Cubo-Futurists in Moscow; but broke with them by 1912. He was one of the most active of modern Russian poets, often performing at "poetic concerts" all over the country with a lily in his hand à la Oscar Wilde whom he greatly admired. Although the American poet Babette Deutsch criticized "his intolerably clownish and vacuous verse," Severyanin also had many admirers. He was one of the first poets to leave Russia after the Revolution and was never able to return. (8).
