ANISFELD, Boris (1879-1973). Two male nudes.
1901-1909. Male nude standing hunched. Red chalk on off-white wove paper (420 x 290 mm). Matted and framed. Inscribed on verso at lower left in graphite: Book/484; and in blue ink; 1. Provenance: Shepherd Gallery (label on back). From the artists's sketch books, estate no. 484. [With:] Male nude clutching himself (420 x 290 mm). Inscribed lower left in graphite: Book/483; and in ink; 4. Study of cat in graphite on verso. Provenance: Shepherd Gallery (label on back). From the artists's sketch books, estate no. 483. Anisfeld worked as a sculptor, lithographer, painter, illustrator and set designer. He attended the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg from 1901 to 1909. Anisfeld most likely produced these drawings while studying at the Academy. Each work exudes a linear sensibility and an attention to gradations of color, creating a powerful psychological effect.
