Title: Message from the President of the United States, Communicating Discoveries Made in Exploring the Missouri, Red River and Washita, by Captains Lewis and Clark, Doctor Sibley, and Mr. Dunbar; with a Statistical Account of the Countries Adjacent. February 19, 1806. Printed by Order of the Senate
Author: Jefferson, Thomas
Description: 171, [7] pp. + 1 inserted table. 7¾x4¾, modern quarter calf & marbled boards, spine ruled in gilt, morocco label. First Edition, Senate issue.Senate issue of the first edition of the first book containing information regarding the Lewis and Clark expedition, being a covering letter by Jefferson and several documents describing recent explorations; although Lewis and Clark had not yet returned from their expedition, their earlier report and a letter written from the upper Missouri on the eve of their departure contain significant data. In addition, Streeter notes that "The two letters by Dr. Sibley on Texas included in this Message, one on the Indian tribes of Texas and the other an account of the Red River and the adjacent country seem to be the first account of Texas in book form except for the sketchy translation of the unsatisfactory Pages narrative." This copy without the very rare map, which was of the Washita River in Louisiana from Hot Springs to the confluence of the Red River with the Mississippi. Also, lacking the folding table that should follow p.30 - a single-page inserted table does follow p.34. Graff 4406; Howes L319; Sabin 40824; Streeter 290; Wagner-Camp 5:2
