  • ABOUT THIS PIECE -
The Hartley Elegies pieces by Robert Indiana, are arguably considered one of his best works of art in the artist's entire body of work. Not only is it one of his best, but also one of his most personal, according to Indian himself.

Here is the story of the Hartley Elegie Pieces:

Marsden Hartley, a very famous American artist, who is from Maine and worked in Vilan Haven, where Robert Indian lives, went to Europe to work. There he met and fell in love with a World War I German officer, named Karl Von Freyburg. Von Freyburg was killed in the war, while serving the German army. This was devastating to Hartley. Thus he painted his most famous painting entitled "Portrait of a German Soldier", in honor of his lover. This painting was owned by Alfred Steiglitz, and is now in the MET in New York City.

Fast Forward to Robert Indiana, whose hero/idol is Marsden Hartley. He moved to the same town where Hartley painted. Taken by the history of Hartley painting, painted 10 works in honor to Hartley, knowm as the Hartley Elegies. They are Indiana's portrait of Hartley, Von Freyburg and of himself.

Each piece is very large, just as the original Hartley paintings were. Each piece has the symbolism of the Hartley paintings, as well as Indian's own symbolism.

According to critics and scholars, the Hartley Elegies are one of the most important works of art ever created by Robert Indiana. They are very rare works of art, that do not come up for sale on the open market too often. This is an opportunity to own one of the best work of art by Robert Indiana.
