18th U.S. President. Grant ALS, 1 page, dated May 25, 1878, from Hotel Liverpool Paris. After the end of his presidency, Grant went on an extensive global tour which lasted from the Spring of 1877 to the fall of 1879. Grant was one of the first presidents that traveled throughout Europe, Asia and Africa. His adventures abroad were chronicled in the book , "Around the World with General Grant." Grant writes to an American Ambassador in Europe, "Hon. Judge Beiney(?) - U.S. Minister". Grant continues in his hand: "...It is my present purpose to leave Paris for the Hague within Saturday-- Three weeks from today-- or on the Tuesday following. It is my recollection that when we met last you asked me to inform you of the time of my proposed visit to your port... My stay will probably be but for a few days... I will the go to Copenhagen. If you should be in leave of absence at this time... I beg that you make no changes in your plans on my account... P.S. My party will consist of only Mrs. Grant and myself.
