16th President. Lengthy Autograph Endorsement Signed as President on verso of integral leaf of a Manuscript Letter Signed by Chas Olden as Governor of New Jersey, one page, 7.75" x 9.75". Trenton, October 8, 1861. On pictorial State of New Jersey Executive Department stationery. In full "I take pleasure in introducing to you the bearer Captain Geo B. Raymond of New Jersey a very worthy citizen who has rendered our state good service. He has visited Washington several times at my request in charge of important business which he most satisfactorily performed. He is an accomplished Seaman, to prove which he has abundant testimonials and desirous of serving his country in this her hour of need has offered himself to the Secretary of the Navy to take command of a vessel. Should it be in accordance with your wishes to further by application I would feel under obligations for the favor." Lincoln's endorsement to Gideon Welles: "Respectfully submitted to the Secretary of the Navy, asking a fair consideration, and that Mr. Raymond be employed, if consistent with the public ser-vice." Signed, "A. Lincoln" and "Chas S. Olden". Heavy worn folds on Olden's letter with tears and repairs on both sheets, mostly on the folds. Olden biographical notes in pencil at lower left of his letter. The outside blank corners of the integral page are damaged. There are copious yellow and a few reddish stains but none on Lincoln's fine signature. Both Olden's letter and Lincoln's endorsement can be displayed.
