40th President. Historic autograph quotation signed. Written entirely in Reagan's hand in fountain pen on his own personal Ronald Reagan - Pacific Palisades letterhead, 8.5" x 11" , no date. Reagan write: "Appeasement doesn't give a choice between peace or war but only between fight or surrender." This line comes from Reagan's famous "A Time for Choosing" speech, and summarized Reagan's political position against communism. Reagan gave the "Time for Choosing" speech at the Republican convention. He also took excerpts from that speech and put them in his book, "Where's the Rest of Me?" That was his first autobiography. The full paragraph of this quote was in reference to the Cold War against communism:Reagan said: "A policy of accommodation is appeasement, and appeasement does not give us a choice between peace and war, only between fight and surrender. We are told that the problem is too complex for a simple answer; they are wrong. There is no easy answer, but there is a simple answer. We must have the courage to do what we know is morally right, and this policy of accommodation asks us to accept the greatest possible immorality. We are being asked to buy our safety from the threat of the atomic bomb by selling into permanent slavery our fellow human beings enslaved behind the Iron Curtain, to tell them to give up their hope of freedom-why? Because we are ready to make a deal with their slave masters."In Reagan's view, this appeasement was saying the Russians have their sphere of influence; we have ours; we need to learn how to get along. Reagan said that is the greatest immorality because it sold out all those people in the eastern block and this could not last, eventually it will eventually lead to war or surrender by us.He wasn't going to accept this appeasement. He wanted to become President, first and foremost, for the purpose of stopping this appeasement policy and for confronting Soviet Communism for what it was. He did win the Presidency and he did stop the policy of appeasement. The rest is history. This speech, and most particularly this line from the speech, is said to have been his first famous quotation against communism and is partially responsible for getting Reagan elected as President later. The handwritten quote is accompanied by an original copy of a trade magazine containing a lengthy article by Reagan, titled "No Place to Escape To," which incorporates the same quotation in full. This item originally came from a Reagan insider. Outstanding content and in excellent condition. ![]() page for more information about Autographs our Guarantee and Our Company.
