William H. Taft Letter Signed UACC PADA

Sign In to see what this sold for

27th President of the United States and Supreme Court Chief Justice, Typed Letter Signed, 5.5" x 8", 1 page, dated July 7th, 1908, Hot Springs, Virginia. The letter is typed on Taft's letterhead, a year before his presidency. Then governor Taft writes to A.L Lawshe Second Assistant Postmaster-General, "I am in receipt of the inclosed telegram from George W. Brown of Wayne P.A., which I do not understand." Signed "William H. Taft" Of interest is the retained 3-page 4to copy of Lawshe's reply which explains that Brown was a Civil War veteran amputee who had been appointed as Postmaster at Wayne, PA. The Postmaster General had for years tried to remove him from office for fraud, incompetence, and general nuttiness. The attached letter reads in part "..The telegram properly puncuated would read: 'Mr. Taft will not need the crippled soldier. Is this correct? Relply.'Under the date of June 20, George W. Brown, former post-master at Wayne, Ps., addressed to you at Cincinnati a letter, in which he referred to the fact that he was a maimed soldier of the civil war. . . Mr. Brown had been recommended for removal by Post Office Inspectors on April 6, 1906, and March 4, 1907, for the irregular sal of stamps in large quantities. . . On November 20, 1907, his removal was recommended for incompetency, wilfully delaying first class mail, and refusal to comply with instructions of inspectors. . . It appears from the papers in the case that Mr. Brown, by reason of age or otherwise, has become mentally incapacitated for performing the duties of the office, and it was in fact an act of mercy to displace him. Had he continued in office, action which might have disgraced him might have become necessary, in view of the recommendation of the Inspectors." In excellent condition.
