Union major general who led a brigade at 1st Bull Run and later commanded the IX Corps at Petersburg. Handwritten Autograph Letter Signed. "A. E. Burnside" 4pp. 8vo., Providence Aug. 19, 1865, written to ex-Capt. Henry S. Burrage 36th Mass. Vol., concerning an article Burrage is writing about the Knoxville campaigning. In part: "...I feel as you that our East Tenn. Campaign is not well understood, and now that the war is over I will be glad to render you any assistance in my favor in preparation of an article for the Atlantic...I have not yet prepared my own part of operations...Gen'l. Halleck took occasion to say some hard things of the early part of the campaign in his report to Congress...I decide not to write a report until such time as I could without injury to this service speak of Halleck's wrong statements... before congress assembles I hope to make up my report...I will gladly give you free access to my papers...".
