Crab-style Runaway Slave Shackle made of iron, 5.5" x 3.25" with 2" x 3" opening. The noisy, rattling beads in this shackle helped slave-catchers apprehend fugitives. The shackles were styled like African ceremonial dance anklets. Clever runaways would insert mud pies to muffle the sound. From the letter of authenticity signed by Danny Drain of the Slave Relics Museum, Walterboro, South Carolina: "This letter is to confirm that the enclosed runaway shackle is from our personal collection here at the museum...The beads or stones in the shackles make it possible for dogs to track the escape (sic) slave for miles...The small shackle was often clamped around the ankle with a small lock. These types of shackles were primarily used on runaway slaves, or a slave with a high risk of escaping from the plantation. Slave shackles were primarily forged by Europeans or en-slaved Africans on the plantations. Most of my restraints were purchased here in South Carolina in St. George County. Charleston, S.C. had one of the main auction houses for enslaved Africans...There were many large plantations between Charleston and St. George during the 1700's and 1800's." Normal light rusting due to age, otherwise, in excellent condition. ![]() page for more information about Autographs our Guarantee and Our Company.
