An 8"x10" B&W vintage wire photo of Roger Maris. This telling photo was taken after he was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals from the New York Yankees, the team for which he shined and suffered for seven seasons. Here Maris smokes and looks somewhat haggard as he discusses his previous five seasons in New York after breaking the single season home run record in 1961; these years were fraught with both injuries and run-ins with the New York press who had certainly favored Mickey Mantle in the 1961 race to beat Ruth's record. Fortunately, his last two seasons (1967 and 1968) in St. Louis were a much happier time for Maris, as he was an integral part of two pennant winning Cardinal teams. This AP Wire Photo is specifically dated April 27th, 1967; the caption is intact and interestingly errs when stating that Maris hit 51 homers in 1961 instead of 61. A captivating photo of an often misunderstood but true baseball star of the era.
