William Thornley (Br., 1857-1898), Two Paintings,
the first an oil on canvas, signed lower left "Thornley," shipping off the shore at sunset, SS 9.75" x 15.5", DOA 13.75" x 19.75"; the second also oil on canvas, signed lower left "Thornley," sailing off the shore in choppy water, bears stencil on the verso reading "Robert Dyas / London, E. C.," SS 9.75" x 15.5", DOA 13.75" x 19.75"; Both pictures are in matching gold tone frames retaining a Frank Jarman Limited of Ottawa gallery label on the verso. William Thornley gained success as a marine painter, specializing in seascapes from his native France and the Italian Riviera. While there is some question as to his proper identity, it is known that he exhibited works at the Paris Salon and the Society of French Artists.
