English School, Under Full Sail, Mid 19th c.,
oil on canvas, a somewhat primitive depiction of a frigate gliding past a fortress on land. Britain's Red Ensign flies over an answering pennant, two letter pennants and two numeric pennants. A White Ensign and the numeric pennant signifying "1" appear over the distant fort. After 1864, the Red Ensign was used exclusively by merchantmen; however, it saw naval use before that date. The White Ensign was flown by either Royal Navy vessels or associated shore installations. In period gilt composition frame. DOA 21" x 24.75; SS 15" x 19"
