Sampler with Verse, American, Early 19th c.,
worked by Elizabeth Stivison in 1813, on loose weave linen in shades of gold, natural, and green, verse stitched in black, verse reads: "My tender relations always did strive / by good education to amend my tire By soberriaty industery (sic) and learning / So by then good examples I will take warning." Below verse is maker's name and date. Top motif panel includes flower with basket flanked by ; other motifs include a man and woman above trees and birds, all worked in cross stitch, very sweet and naive rendition, housed in painted frame. DOA: 28" x 19.25"; SS: 24" x 15"
