"THE BITTER DREGS OF DEFEAT" An "Amnesty Oath" dated Galveston, July 7, 1865, issued to and required of all citizens of the defeated South as a pre-requisite to restored citizenship and voting privileges. With the end of the cruel Yankee occupation, the oaths were, for the most part, destroyed as a reminder of defeat, hence their acknowledged rarity.
