Comments: He quit his law practice in late 1879, studied painting in Europe, and quickly won recognition for his Impressionist pictures of the brilliantly-colored tulip fields of Holland, often featuring Dutch peasant women in their beautiful costumes. He became known as the painter of sunlight." An expatriate, he traveled frequently, usually spending his winters in Paris and his springs and summers in Holland. In Holland, his houseboat was named "The Tulip."
