During the last 45 years as a dealer I have learned to appreciate many different type of rarities within the field of U.S. paper money, but the most intriguing to me have always been the high denomination bank notes of the issuing period of 1861 through 1923. Let's face it, $500 or $1,000 was a big pile of change in those days, especially when this specimen/proof was designed by the American Bank Note Company in August 1861. Our Nation was divided, but even the South was stopping at $1,000 bonds and $1,000 notes to carry them through the battle. In Washington, DC's infinite wisdom they designed this $5,000 Interest Bearing Note that accrued 7-3/10% interest and was convertible to 20 years at 6% U.S. This is one of only four different large types of the $5,000 ever seen in print. The first is a two-sided note with stars for serial numbers that realized over $700,000 in auction in the last year or so. The others are seemingly permanently impounded by government institutions and I doubt we will ever see one offered for sale during my lifetime.
