This beautiful New Hampshire 20 Shillings last appeared in the 1997 Smythe sale in Strasburg where it was described as follows, "Signed by Thompson and Nicholas Gilman, the Treasurer, whose sons, Nicholas and John Taylor were a U.S. Senator and State governor respectively. The paper is watermarked with a seated Britannia with spear. To judge by this and the succeeding note, those notes numbering 1 - 1000 fell due in 1776; 1001 - 2000 matured in 1777 and those numbering 2001 - 3000 were redeemable in 1778. Ex Lot 2255 Bicentennial of the Constitution Auction September 18, 1897 conducted by San Diego Show, Inc. Abt. VF, quarter folded, scattered soiling and staining." This note is gorgeous for the grade. I can't see why not a full VF 30 in anyone's book. A tag with the note shows it was offered 10 years earlier in an E.A.N. sale. This note realized $4,255 ten years ago.
