Ptolemaic Egypt, MARBLE BUST OF SERAPIS

Ptolemaic Egypt, c. 300 BC., a small and finely carved marble bust of the god Serapis. He wears typical heavy beard with long locks of hair from one side of his beard to the other as it extends almost down to shoulder. His eyes are wide open with heavy eyebrows as he gazes off in the distance. His shoulders and chest are large with the ruffling of his robe well defined. Modius appears minimal and with losses. Mounted on tall wood black with metal pole. Nice mottled patina throughout. H: 4.5". Ex. Al Oikonomedes Collection, Chicago. Ventura County Collection.
