William Mathew Prior Oil Painting of Young Lady, American, Baltimore period, ca 1840, on sheet paper which is adhered to cardboard. Likely original, period frame; 15.5" high x 12" wide.

William Mathew Prior (1806-1873), was born in Bath, Maine (1806). A folk artist who lived in Portland, Maine (1831-40), he worked throughout New England and in Baltimore, Maryland; afterward he settled in Boston (1841), where he established a portrait studio.
