Sign In to see what this sold for

Mennonite Attributed Exuberant Grain-Painted Dower Chest, American, found in Kansas, possibly North American Plains, Mennonite immigrants, ca 1880-1910. Constructed of pine, with an old grained paint mimicking bird's-eye and tiger maple. A lid having an over-lipped top, also iron cotter pin hinges and retaining its original iron lock. The interior having a till, lower down on the case one full width drawer below a strip of moulding having old stamped brass hardware, all over scrolled and painted feet; 29.25" high x 45.75" wide x 20.50" deep. (For examples with similar characteristics see Janzen 1991.)

Mennonites migrated from Prussia, Poland and south Russia to the Plains of North America. With skilled carpenters, these immigrants built and decorated furniture in the same style as they left behind in Europe.
