William Louis Sonntag (American, 1822-1900) Figures in Early Summer Landscape
oil on canvas signed l.l. signed and dated on verso: W.L. Sonntag/ Cin. O, 1852 with Growney & Co. canvas maker's label on verso 24.5" x 36" William Sonntag first gained his reputation in Cincinnati, where he was active from 1841-53 before departing for Europe along with African American painter Robert Scott Duncanson. While in the Queen City, many of his sketching trips took him to the rural areas of Kentucky and western Virginia, and the resulting canvases were executed and marketed in Cincinnati. This work was completed a year before his departure. Condition reportStretched on left side, moving the first half of signature to perimeter of stretcher. Moderate inpainting in sky and light, even craquelure, also in sky.
