J.L. Rue "Mrs. Cummings" Presentation Pitcher, American, ca 1871, of Rockingham glazed earthenware, attributed to John L. Rue and Company, or one of the other successors to the Swan Hill Pottery, South Amboy, New Jersey. The pitcher has high relief design of riders and hounds approaching a stag, raised oak leaf design below rim and MRS CUMMINGS in raised white letters below the spout, with the handle molded to represent a tree branch. An applied flint enamel glazed pottery frog with blue and green glaze rests on the bottom of the light tan interior. Incised script on bottom South Amboy/September 28 1871, and additional illegible script and tree-like device; 9.25" high. (See Goldberg 2003: 40, fig. 26.)
