Autograph Letter Signed, "F.A. Leslie" 2p. quarto, Mobile, Alabama, December 9, 1860, and reads in part: "...I arrived home on the 15th of Nov. and should have written you much sooner had I not have found anything in such an unsettled state on account of the election of Lincoln. The people here have determined to sacrafice anything rather than submit to the sale of a black republican President. And of course our business for the year is ruined in consequence, and if we get matters arranged in one year we shall be doing very well. That the Souther States will secede there isn’t a doubt. The Slavery question has got to be settled, and this seems to be the only way to do it. And perhaps it is as well to have it settled now as at any other time. Had either of the other candidates been elected we should have gone on for four years longer I suppose, and then we should have had the same fight over again. Whether we shall have to fight out or whether we shall go out peaceably I cannot tell. There is one thing certain there is nothing to be made on either side by fighting and if a state wishes to go out of the Unionfor what they deem to be a sufficient cause no power on earth, has the right to prevent them from doing so. There is a Convention called for the 7th of Jan. and I presume they will vote as one man for secession..." Fine.
