General Ripley Does Not Want to Serve with General B

RIPLEY, Roswell Sabine (1823-1887) An 1843 West Point graduate, brevetted twice for Mexican War service. As a Confederate lieutenant colonel in the South Carolina forces, he occupied Fort Moultrie, 1860, and Fort Sumter, after its evacuation by Major Robert Anderson in April 14, 1861. Ripley was appointed brigadier general in the CSA in August 1861. He later commanded a brigade and was wounded at Sharpsburg. Autograph Letter Signed, "R.S. Ripley B. Genl." 1p. quarto, Charleston, South Carolina, January 20, 1865, addressed to Colonel Brent, A. Adjt. Genl., Montgomery, Alabama, and reads "I have the honor to enclose here with a letter to the Adjut & Insp. Genl, requesting that when my leave of absence expires I may not be ordered to the command of Gen. G.T. Beauregard...." Fine.
