Autograph Letter Signed, "Danl. Lafever" Sheriff of Berkley County, Virginia, 1p. folio, Martinsburg, July 11, 1861, and reads: "…I came into Martinsburg yesterday the 10th and presented myself before General Patterson, stating to him that I wished to know wether I could go on and attend to my business. I also stated to him that I heard that they were a rumor that I was to be arrested. The Genl. Then stated to me at once that it was much better for me that I gave myself up and I have every assurance that I will be released in a very short time in fact to day. The General appears to be a very humane, kind and respectable gentleman, and that his intention is to treat all kindly that gives themselves up. They have released several that have been arrested that there were considerable charges against. Wm. Sparow has gave himself up, I think it is best for all to come home that have families and your family being here I think you had better come home, and if they do arrest you I think they would not detain you long, they may require you to take the oath of Allegiance. I think it better for us all to be at home. I think this is the only way for us to do, so as to attend to our business. If we are released we have the assurance that we can attend to our business without molestation.." VG.
