Autograph Letter Signed, "Daniel Lefever Sheriff B.C." 1p. folio, Martinsburg, Virginia, August 12, 1861, and reads "After much consideration I have come to the conclusion to resign my office of sheriffalty which I do assure you is very unpleasant to me. When I remember the large number of my fellow citizens that cast their suffrage for me to fill the office, and which action of theirs was confined by the Honorable Court of the county, but although I now resign will ever be appreciated by me. I have discharged the duties of the office as well as I knew how up to the present time. But owing to the distracted condition of affairs in the county and state I feel that it is impossible for me to comply with the Requisition of the office any longer. I have no doubt but you the Honorable Court would extend a spirit of levity and forbearance towards me in my official duties. And moreover I have no reason to believe but what the state authorities at Richmond would do the same, at least to some extent. But besides having to depend on the levity and mercy of the Richmond authorities, we have another, would be State authority that is sprung up in Wheeling and recognized by the Federal Government. Which makes requirements of me, as you will be able to see by the requisitions that is laid before you that I am not able to comply with and therefore in due sense to myself and Family and at the same time with much regard to your Honorable Body, my Prayer is that you will accept my Resignation…" VG.
