Troubling Times in the Spring of 1861

Sign In to see what this sold for

Autograph Letter Signed, "Jno. B. Marten" 3p. octavo, Baltimore, Maryland, May 2, 1861, with cover addressed to his wife in Rockbridge Co. Virginia, with Baltimore cds, it reads in part: "…I found my sister Harriet in the house. They stay here at night having not been able to make arrangements for lodging elsewhere in view of the unsettled state of things. I hope you will manage Andy so as to have no trouble, about his place or work. I wish you would induce Asbury & Thos. When he comes, both to employ themselves. Changes have taken place since we left. I suppose the Marylanders fear being overrun & instant destruction of Balto. makes some careful about too bold a stand, yet I cannot now tell having conversed with none since my arrival…P.S. I will direct this via Winchester - you will do the same…" VG.
