Two items pertaining to Confederate sheriffs, includes: Autogrpah Letter Signed, "Daniel Lafever" 2p. octavo, Martinsburg, Virginia, July 13, 1861, and reads in part: "...I consider you have done me a great injustice by quiting the office of Jailor that I had appointed you to without giving me any notice what ever, you know that when you and your friends applied to me for to continue you in the office that I demanded of you to attend to the duties that pertained to the office and let other mens business alone which you promised me faithfully you would, and you know that about the time that the volunteers, on companies started to Harpers Ferry and you appeared to be taking a part in the matter and under the influence of liquor to some extent...I see you driving some cattle through the streets of Martinsburg which I suppose you slaughtered for the Confederate Troops, which business you know you have been following ever since and not attending to the business I appointed you to..." Bennett" 1p. quarto, on Auditor’s Office, lettersheet, Richmond, Virginia, August 19, 1861, with corresponding cover, it reads "The Convention of Virginia conferred authority upon to settle equitably with all sheriffs situated as you are and all I can say is for you to collect all you can pay it.
