Autograph Letter Signed, "J. Barroll Washington" 1p. octavo, Hd. Qrs. Manassas, July 28, 1861, addressed to his cousin Augustine, and reads "I will again trouble you to draw my pay for me. My pay account I send which you will be so good to fill what I have left blank. I have just received my commission in the Confederate Army & I have enclosed my resignation in the V.P.A. which you will please hand in to the proper authorities. I heard through Mr. Lloyd the ohter day that they wer eall well at Waverly..." Laminated. Good. James Barroll Washington was a great-great grandnephew of President George Washington, who served as ADC to General Joseph Johnston was captured at Fair Oaks and the papers he had on his person exposed the Conrad Spy Ring.
