A great early war-date partly-printed Southern document issued on the very day the American Civil War began, April 12, 1861, 1p. oblong 8vo., boldly printed at the top: "MISSISSIPPI CENTRAL RAIL-ROAD COMPANY," being a receipt for five shares of stock in the Mississippi Central company. This now famous rail line was completed in 1860 after nearly eight years of construction. At that time the rail line connected Canton, Miss. with Jackson, Tenn. and was badly damaged during Grant's campaign to capture Vicksburg during 1862 and 1863. Today the original rail line is now part of the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad. A rare Southern document dated the day that changed American history! Negligible damp stains, else very good.
