Autograph Letter Signed, "W.T. Cobb" 2p. folio, In Camp near Richmond, June 3, 1862, and reads in part: "...We are in the left wing of the army & have not yet bee brought into action, but are expecting hourly to be brought into action. We are some four or five miles of where our amry is engaged, & can distincly hear the firing. I suppose Charles is in it as I see his Reg mentioned as having taken one of the batteries. We have been here nearly a week, we were near the fight at Hanover Court House, but on account of mismanagement of the commanding officer was not allowed to take part in it. I must confess it was the worst managed affaair you ever heard of, the General must have been a base coward, their was two other Reg on the ground, that was not put in action at all, the prisoners taken by us say, if they had been we would have taken the entire army, we were twice drawn up in line of battle and expected to be attacked altho it ws three or four miles of where they were fighting. About sundown we were certain of an attack and were ready to meet it (I hope as soldiers should) just then our army came by on the retreat, which we had to cover, some of the enemy cavalry were then in sight, not the ones that had been in the fight, we fell back some six miles that night (to Ashland) over the worst road I ever saw, it was knee deep in mud and water nearly all the way, we were persued four miles by the enemy, but they did not come up altho they were in hearing. We have lost our tents & every thing else except our blankets...we were not under our commanding officer at the time...We are under Brig Gen. Anderson & Maj. Gen. Hill who is of some notariety..."
