General Ripley Needs More Slaves for the Fortificat

RIPLEY, Roswell Sabine (1823-1887) An 1843 West Point graduate, brevetted twice for Mexican War service. As a Confederate lieutenant colonel in the South Carolina forces, he occupied Fort Moultrie, 1860, and Fort Sumter, after its evacuation by Major Robert Anderson in April 14, 1861. Ripley was appointed brigadier general in the CSA in August 1861. He later commanded a brigade and was wounded at Sharpsburg. Autograph Letter Signed, "R.S. Ripley Br. Gen. Comg." 1p. quarto, on "Head Quarters 2nd Military District South Carolina" lettersheet, Charleston, South Carolina, April 17, 1862, and reads in part: "...Dr. James L. Morrow will proceed to the districts of Barnwell and Williamsburg for the purpose of procurring hands for labor on the fortifications around Charleston. The necessity admits of no delay. If not furnished he will proceed to impress to the extent of one half of the male hands belonging to each planter. Being careful not to take from those whose hands have already been furnished to other agents..." VG.
