Manuscript Letter Signed, "James Mercer Green" Surgeon in Charge Genl Hospitals, 2p. quarto, Genl. Hospital, Macon, Georgia, October 7, 1863, addressed to Surgeon S.H. Stout, Medical Director of Hospitals, Army of Tennessee, and reads in part: "...I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt (through Surgeon Choille) of your communication from Marietta dated 4th Oct. 1863, requesting me to extend our Hospital accomodations, employ Private Physicians, and generally to make such arrangements as might be necessary for taking care of the sick and wounded of Genl. Braggs Army. I need hardly say Sir, that independent of considerations of duty. I shall comply with your request with the greatest pleasure, and will make every exertion to increase my Hospital accomodations to the required level. You will no doubt have learned, from Surgeon Choille, that we have already made the necessary arrangments for the care of 7 to 800 patietns and are now perfecting our arrangements, so that at any moment we can increase this to 12 to 1500. I will inform you in a few days of the names of those physicians whom I desire to make contracts with. I expect I will have to invoke your influence with Maj. Genl. Howell Cobb Comd’g State Troops, Atlanta, Ga. to secure the services of Dr. W.J. Green, who is in the state service and is ordered shortly to report to Atlanta...Assistant Surgeons Kinckley and Gov. G. Griffin, were ordered here to report to you, and in your absence, they were ordered by Surgeon Choille to report to me and were assigned to duty. At some convenient period I shall probably ask you to replace the latter of these two gentlemen with another assistant surgeon. With the aid of one of these two gentlemen, and two other intelligent asst Surgeons, and the Contract physicians whose names I will send you. Our Hospital staff will be sufficiently large for the present. Can you give me any definite idea at this time of the number of men, for whom you will require beds. If so, I will immediately increase our means to that number. We Medical Directors of Hospitals for Genl Beauregards Department is Surgeon N.S. Cronell and his address in Charleston, So. Ca...." Fine.
