Autograph Letter Signed, "Virginl Due" 2p. quarto, Camp Church, James Island, November 25, 1863, and reads in part: "...I have had a very pleasant time in camp since I left the city, I have been on picket only once since I reported for duty, I heard yesterday that Col. Simonton [25th South Carolina Infantry] said that he expects our Regt would have to go to Fort Sumter within two weeks...The Yankee gunboat Pawnee, came up the Stono yesterday and shelled our camp, when the first shell came in to camp it was about dinner time and all of us forgot about the dinner, one of the shells struck Capt. Hammond’s tent as soon as they commenced to shell our pickets opened on her with rifles but did no damage to her. I think you will hear from the Eutaws as soon as we have dark nights, Col. Simonton has an expedition on land to destroy the gunboat Pawnee, Capt Hammond will be in command of the expedtition...Camp Mazyck has returned to camp, all of the men as very glad to see him, he will take command tomorrow...
