Autograph Letter Signed, "W.B. Murray" 2p. octavo, Stateburg, April 4, 1863, addressed to B.F. Arthur, and reas in part: "... will try and explain the difference in the petition & the magestrates report. There were three negroes tried for the robbery, viz John, Smith & big John. John & Smith were found guilty and Big John acquitted. After sentance was passed on the two who were found quildy, they acknowledged that Big John had nothing to do with the theft, but that Henry (another boy of Dr. Moore’s) was with them. Mrs. Moore being informed of the fact, told Mr. Seals the prosecution, that she would give up Henry, whenever he sent for him & have him carried to jail & be punished the same as Smith & I was under the impression that he had been sent to jail until within a few days. Dr. Moore was in Charleston when he had the petition drawn out & was under the impression that Henry had been taken to jail...I hope that my explanation of this matter will be satisfactory to the Governor & that he will see fit to grant the petitions..."
