Autograph Letter Signed, "S.F. Broun" 5-1/4p. quarto, Chantilly, October 10, 1863, with integral address leaf to her husband "Lt. col. W.L. Broun Richmond Arsenal, Richmond" who had command of Fort Grafton while at the head of the Albermarle Light Artillery, and reads in part: "…dipthoerea has appeared in one case among the servants here . I am more & more determined to remain with my dear children for I cannot but feel fearful of them having so terrible a disease & they are not very well…you must try & come up & spend some days with me for I do so long to see you my dear old fellow…dear old Husband you know you would never have been found so hand & foot in love with me had it not been for my beauty….two of the little servant boys went of their own accord to the field to bring up Grandma's old blind horses & on their return, one of the horses stumbled & fell on one of those little fellows & when he was brought to the house he was entirely dead for his skull was on one side mashed in. He was one of a pair of twins & a handsome little fellow about 8 years old. I approve very highly in your purchase of Georgia & want you to lay up as much money as you can from your salary so as to invest in the payment for the place, for only $20,000 is very little for our three children. Pa told me the other day that he wanted to give you two or three other servants so as to make me equal with what he has given Mary…" Also mention of Mrs. Gorgas receiving a present. VG.
