Aldrich, A.D.C." 1p. quarto, Executive Department, Charleston, South Carolina, July 28, 1863, and reads "His Excellency Governor Bonham has been informed that experienced managers of Negroes are much wanted, to superintend and push on the work on the fortifications now being erected for the defense of the city. Knowing your efficiency & experience & relying upon your patriotism he requests you to aid the State in this emergency. You will report to Maj. Echols, Broad Street, with this note, who will assign you to duty..." Manuscript on verso states this is a copy circular. Fine.
