Official retained ‘Copy’ of an Autograph Letter Signed by Johnson Hagood, Brig. Genl. Comd’g, 1-1/2p. quarto, Head Quarters, James Island, July 13, 1863, addressed to Captain Nance, and reads "I beg leave respectfully to report my suggestion made by telegraph yesterday, that our lines on this Island be extended from this present Eastern terminus to the rear along the water frton as far as Legaree’s Point. The enemy are threatening us in that direction & a lodgment effected there in force will turn over present position behind the lines and necessitate the abandoment of the Island or putting its fate upon a battle in the open field without the aid of intrenchments. To do this I must have negro or other extra labor & an energetic Engineer immediately..." Extensive docketing on verso. VG.
