Autograph Letter Signed, Pleasant A. Holt, Assistant Surgeon, 6th North Carolina, 4p. quarto, Asheville, August 1, 1864, and reads in part: "…There is an exhilarating and elastic influence in this climate peculiarly refreshing and added to the beautiful scenery everywhere presented there is no apparent possibility for lassitude. Great interest is manifested in the approaching gubernatorial election. The soldiers voted here last Thursday and gave Vance nearly two to one….I am very desirous to see Holden beaten by a very large majority…Asheville itself is an exceedingly pleasant village. Much of the population cultivated and refined….From one mountain near by I surveyed one of the most pictouresque landscapes imaginable….The whole boarded by the blue mountains towering above the plains far away, all combined to present a landscape fit for the most exalted genius of a Rembrandt…I do not know who long the War Department will retain me here…I have agreed to perform some surgical operations…" VG.
