A rare war-date Confederate manuscript Special Orders, 1p. 8vo., issued by Gen. Gabriel C. Wharton, "Camp Abington, Va.", April 23, 1864 concerning the second reprieve of a Confederate sharpshooter for desertion. In part: "Lt. Col. J. Lyle Clarke will send Private William Tucker, Co. E, 30th Va. Batl. S. S. under guard to Richmond, Va. and turn him over to the commanding officer there with a copy of his sentence for the Execution...". Early in the war, Tucker first served in the 51st Virginia Infantry. Transferred in late 1862 into the 30th Virginia Battalion Sharpshooters, he twice deserted only to have both sentences of death reprieved by the Confederate government. Returning to the regiment after this last close call with death. Tucker was captured at the battle of Waynesboro and imprisoned at Fort Delaware until paroled. Light spotting, else very good.
