SEDDON, James Alexander (1815-1880) Member of the Confederate Provisional Congress (1861-62) and Confederate Secretary of War 1862-65. Confederate Special Orders No. 91 Signed "John W. Riely" AAG, 1p. quarto, Richmond, April 19, 1864, addressed to Secretary of War James Seddon, with extract reading "Wm. B. Johnston having been appointed by the General Assembly of South Carolina as Agent for the collection and record, for deposit in the state archives, of the names of the gallant sons of South Carolina, who have, from whatever cause, fallen in their country’s defense; commanding officers of Armies in which South Carolina Troops may be serving are requested to afford him such facilities in the discharge of his duties as may not conflict with the interests of the service..." Fine....plus; Letter Signed, "James A. Seddon" 1p. octavo, Confederate States of America, War Department lettersheet, April 21, 1864, addressed to Governor Bonham, it reads " I have the honor to invite your attention to the enclosed copy of an Extract from Special Orders No. 91 issued from teh Adjt and Insp Genls Office, in reference to Wm B. Johnston, appointed by the General Assembly of SC as Agent for the collection, and record of the names of the gallant sons of SC who have fallen in their country’s defence..." Fine. (2 items)
