Autograph Letter Signed, "J.M. Davneport, Co. A, 16th Reg. Mo. Inft. 2 Brigade, Parsons Division, 4p. octavo, Camp near Shreveport, Louisiana, April 30, 1865, and reads in part: "...we wasordered to move which we did, we went to Colinsburgh which is about 28 miles from this place, we remained there 2 days and was ordered back to Shreveport, we had a very muddy march...I think when we left here the intention was to go to Missouri but when the news was received that General Lee with his Army in Northern Virginia was captured the trip to Missouri was given out; so we was compelled to come back in order to get supplies, that country being entirely eat out so much so that it was impossible for us to subsist even our Division which contains about 3 thousand 5 hundred men, as portion of the time that we was there we had no meat atall and the meat that we drew was not good...the citizens here are the worst whipped set that you ever saw, they are right in for Reconstruction, they contend that we are whipped, well it is a very dark hour that is certain but I hardly think that we are whipped yet though we are badly injured, but I am in favor of hanging to the ship as long as there is a sound Plank. Confederate money is selling in Shreveport 100 for 1 now when the news first reached here of the capture of Lee it sold for just double what it is now selling for, I heard this morning that Capt. Brinker with his party numbering 18 in all was captured and killed on White River, they was on their way to Missouri...There has been so much said about us being whipped...but there is one thing certain I never will assist the United States to subjugate Mexico which they will be sure to undertake provided they whip us..." Pressure sensative tape repairs on verso, else about VG.
