Autograph Letter Signed, S.Y. Tupper, Captain, 1st South Carolina Battalion Infantry, 2p. quarto, March 26, 1865, Sumter, C.H., South Carolina, and reads in part: "...I arrived here yesterday from Columbia in company with Mr. Wm. Whaley...We are endeavoring to get to his plantation ‘Dean Hall’ on Cooper river...The enemy occupy so much of the surrounding country, and the Negroes, being armed and in possessions of so many plantations, the prospect seems gloomy enough. The accounts we get from Charleston are also very disheartening. Numerous fires have taken place, Negro processions parading the streets, and ever body taking the oath of allegiance...I am sad and miserable. We must be prepared to hear bad news from the Arm. I fear dear George is badly wounded, perhaps worse...Wm. Harral is here and sent me word that George was seriously wounded in the fight between Hampton and Kilpatrick in No. Carolina. I can hear nothing of Tut & Frederick; their company has also been engaged in the recent battles. I apprehend that my town and country property will be confiscated for non-payment of taxes imposed by the Yankees. The order from the General commanding is that the returns for taxes must be made by the owners in person. I cannot do this nor will I have the specie or greenbacks to pay it...I shall try to get the protection of a flag of truce to hold communications with them if other means fail. We have many Charleston people here: Doctor J.L. Dawson, Dr. Jervey, Dr. Hayes, Dr. Holbrook, George S. Bryan, Rev Winkler, etc. etc..." Fine.
