MARTIN, William Joseph, Enlisted on 9/2/1861 at Orange County, NC as a Captain; 9/2/1861 he was commissioned into "G" Co. NC 28th Infantry; 4/28/1862 he transferred into Field & Staff NC 11th Infantry; Surrendered on 4/9/1865 at Appomattox Court House, VA. Major 4/28/1862; Lt Col 5/6/1862; Colonel 4/27/1864. Wounded 10/14/1863 Bristoe Station, VA (Head and left arm); Wounded 9/30/1864 Jones' Farm, VA. Document signed, "W.J.Martin, Col. Cmd. Regt," Appomattox Court House Parole, April 10th, 1865, 8" x 3," very good, pre-printed and filled out in manuscript. Issued for J(ohn) A(lexander) Pinnix of Co. E, 11th Regt, NC. In Pinnix’ obituary printed in The Caswell Messenger Newspaper 6 Aug 1931, it is noted, "Dr. Pinnix had a honorable war record, as a follower of Lee and Jackson, and is said to have been a gallant soldier. He entered the Confederate Army at the age of 16 and served continuously from then to the close of the war, being paroled as a lieutenant at Appomattox following the surrender. He kept his parole which is said to be the only one now known to be in the county. He was a member of company E, Eleventh North Carolina Regiment. A history of he 11th North Carolina notes, as printed in The Charlotte (N. C.), Observer, October 6, 13, 1895, "Its History from Its Organization, March 31, 1862, to the Surrender at Appomattox, Va., April 9, 1865," by Colonel W. J. Martin, Davidson College, N. C. In part, "The exact number of the Eleventh at the surrender is not recorded; it was doubtless less than 100. Whatever it was, I had the melancholy satisfaction of signing their paroles, and the gallant regiment ceased to exist. Different parties took different routes to their desolate homes, and we bade each other a sad, in many cases a tearful, farewell. To all the survivors I send a hearty God bless you.W. J. MARTIN, Late Colonel Commanding."
