Governor Letcher AES

LETCHER, John (1813-1894) Confederate Governor of Virginia, who appointed Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson as army officers. Served 1860-64. Autograph Endorsement Signed, "J. Letcher March 8th/53", 1p. 3-1/2"x8", and reads in part: "...Application of Richd. Miller of Shenandoah Co. Va; for the place of Marshall of the Western Dis. of Va, &c...Mr. M. is a gentleman of fine character, has had much experience in business, and if appointed, would discharge the duties faithfully & to the public satisfaction..." VG.
