Cloth broadside, Declaration of Independence, 23-1/2" x 20-1/2," red/brown printing with facsimili signatures and artwork of the state seals in the border, mounted to board, minor stains, good. The piece comes with manuscript provenance, "The Declaration of Independence was printed on cloth and given to soldiers fighting in the Civil War. This copy was the property of Major Chas. W (we believe this is in error and should be F) Putman of the 153 regiment, NY Volunteers. Loaned by Mrs. Cornelius Van Buren and Mrs. William Kellogg." Our research finds Charles "F." Putman, enlisted on 9/2/1862 at Fonda, NY as a 2nd Lieutenant, 10/23/1862 he was commissioned into "C" Co. NY 153rd Infantry, 1st Lieut 3/20/1863, Capt 6/8/1863, Major 1/4/1865, died of disease on 9/9/1865 at Savannah, GA.
