Autograph Letter Signed, "Louis S. Richards" 4p. folio, Upland Normal School, April 23, 1861, with cover with manuscript "BY THE ETERNAL THE UNION MUST AND SHALL BE PRESERVED! Jackson", and reads in part: "... The military excitement has been so tremendous that I have neglected many duties in the general confusion. You mention that Pottstown is throughly aroused and ‘wide awake.’ The same is true of Chester. Two volunteer companies have gone from Chester to Harrisburg. The people are holding meetings & forming companies at a rapid rate. Trains loaded with government troops are passing through every day and when they stop they are greeted with cheers & huzzahs. Yesterday I went to the depot to see a Govt. train go through and I found that the Pottstown company were aboard...John Potts was there with his musket...They wanted me to go right off with them and I confess that I felt a strong inclination to do so and were it only for myself I should have gone...The Star Spangeld Banner should be my winding sheet before I should be willing to see that magnificient Capitol taken possession of by a band of rebel traitors..." More. VG.
