Autograph Letter Signed, "Harry A. Ely", 3-1/2p. octavo, Brookly, New York, May 26, 1861, and reads in part: "...The boys have a company and I belong to it. We are called the Washington Guards. We meet on the Heights to drill every afternoon after school...Today the funeral of Col. Ellsworth has been attended in NY his cold blooded murdere for it was nothign else, has aroused the deepest sorrow of every heart for he was all that was noble and good. The excitement is past which the first intelligence created, and in its place is a calm, determined resolution to not only avenge his death but to crush out this rebellion and raise the stars & stripes through the south. That it is dreadful to think of, but we cannot, must not longer submit to their murderous insults and all because they want to rule..." VG.
